2010 Almaviva, Rothschild & Concha Y Toro

A joint venture of Concha y Toro and Cha?teau Mouton Rothschild, Almaviva made a wonderful red in 2010. Full-bodied, it shows purity of fruit, with violets, currants and hints of mint, and has ultra-fine tannins and a long, intense finish. Needs three or four years to soften. Mostly cabernet sauvignon.

2010 Angelots Gracia

Michel Gracia’s other tiny estate in St.-Emilion has produced a wonderfully distinctive wine that exhibits plenty of floral notes intermixed with boysenberry, mulberry and blueberry fruit. There also is an underlying flowery character to this opaque ruby/purple, medium to full-bodied wine, which is impressively pure, textured and meant for drinking over the next 10-15 years.

1996 Angludet

This wine is as fine from bottle as it was from cask. The wine is deeply colored, with a ripe, cassis and blackberry-scented nose, with subtle notions of licorice and melted road tar. There is excellent richness, medium body, and moderate tannin in the jammy, rich finish. It should age nicely. This wine is a sleeper of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2015.

2010 Astralis Shiraz, Clarendon Hills

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2010 Astralis is still quite primary eliciting aromas of black plums, blueberry compote and blackcurrant liqueur with a savoury and baking spice undercurrent plus a fragrant whiff of violets. Very structured, fine and complex in the medium to full-bodied mouth, this wine is revealing much more than when I first tasted it a year ago and is now showing layer upon layer of black fruit preserves, mocha, toast and spices before finishing with great length. Extraordinary wine.

2006 Astralis Shiraz, Clarendon Hills

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2006 Astralis has stunning nose redolent of warm blackberries, meat, toast and charcoal, infused with notes of smoked duck, anise and a slight bit of peat. Though still very youthful, this big, rich, and powerful full-bodied wine has firm yet velvety tannins, a vibrant acid line and is very long on the finish.

2008 Astralis Shiraz, Clarendon Hills

Also deep garnet-purple in color, the 2008 Astralis is a little reduced and brooding on the nose showing aromas of dark berries, meat, liquorice and dark chocolate. Big, full-bodied and rich in the mouth it has balanced acid along with medium-firm grainy tannins. It finishes long and balanced.

2007 Barney's Block Shiraz, Two Hands

Glass-staining ruby. Intensely perfumed bouquet of red- and blackcurrant, cherry-cola, tobacco, licorice and cocoa powder. Fleshy, palate-staining dark berry flavors are enlivened by juicy acidity and framed by velvety tannins. Turns sweeter on the finish, which features plush blueberry and floral pastille qualities and a strong kick of smoky Indian spices.

2009 Barolo Sperss, Gaja

The 2009 Sperss sees fruit sourced from Serralunga d’Alba and those telltale signs of the territory are definitely on full display. The power, added structure and thicker density of the wine speak to this corner of the Barolo denomination. Bold cherry and spice are rounded off by leather, tobacco and a touch of toasted Alba hazelnut. The finish is soft and caressing even at this young stage, yet the wine still needs more time to evolve. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2038.
